Abstract
Starfruit is among the 13 major fruits that were given priority in the National Agriculture Policy 3 (NAP3). Starfruit mainly planted in Selangor, Johor, Malacca and Negeri Sembilan. This study evaluated the cost and benefit of netted structure as compared to the conventional system in the starfruit production. Data from the Department of Agriculture and MARDI were utilized for the analysis. The results of the cost and benefit analysis showed that the production cost for netted structure was RM0.95/kg while the conventional system was RM0.89/kg. Annual net income for the netted structure was higher (RM22,570/ha) than the conventional system (RM17,100/ha). The financial analysis showed that the internal rate of returns (IRR) was positive at 24.29% for the netted structure although it was slightly lower than the conventional system which was at 34.46%. Partial budgeting analysis also showed that the value of benefit was higher than the value of implication if farmers converted to the netted structure system. Generally, the netted structure should be an alternative of sustainable practice and reducing dependency on labour in production system, in the long term. However, modification of the structure for cost effectiveness should be considered to ensure the technology can be adopted by the target group. Farmers who involve in export market are encouraged to use the technology because it gives higher yield with better quality control.

 

Abstrak
Belimbing ialah satu daripada 13 buah utama yang diberi keutamaan di dalam Dasar Pertanian Negara Ketiga (DPN3). Kawasan penanaman belimbing kebanyakannya terdapat di Selangor, Johor, Melaka dan Negeri Sembilan. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menilai kos dan faedah penanaman belimbing menggunakan struktur berjaring berbanding dengan penanaman secara konvensional. Data diperoleh daripada Jabatan Pertanian dan MARDI. Analisis kos dan faedah menunjukkan kos pengeluaran ialah RM0.89/kg bagi kaedah konvensional dan RM0.95/kg bagi kaedah berjaring. Pendapatan bersih tahunan bagi kaedah struktur berjaring adalah lebih tinggi (RM22,570/ha) berbanding dengan kaedah konvensional (RM17,100/ha). Analisis kewangan menunjukkan nilai kadar pulangan dalaman (KPD) yang positif iaitu 24.29% bagi kaedah struktur berjaring walaupun nilainya adalah lebih rendah berbanding dengan kaedah konvensional iaitu 34.46%. Analisis belanjawan separa juga menunjukkan nilai faedah melebihi nilai implikasi apabila petani menukar kaedah penanaman belimbing secara konvensional kepada kaedah struktur berjaring. Secara amnya, untuk jangka masa panjang, penggunaan struktur berjaring merupakan alternatif terbaik bagi mencapai pembangunan pertanian secara lestari dan mengurangkan pergantungan kepada buruh dalam sistem pengeluaran. Walau bagaimanapun jika teknologi hendak diterima pakai oleh golongan sasaran, pengubahsuaian struktur berjaring kepada kos yang lebih efektif diperlukan Petani yang mengeksport belimbing digalakkan menggunakan kaedah ini kerana purata hasil yang lebih tinggi serta kawalan kualiti buah yang lebih baik.
