Abstract

Stingless bee keeping (meliponiculture) is a new and recent phenomenon in Malaysia. There is not much research done as yet to determine the effectiveness of weakened nests rehabilitation. This study was to review the effectiveness of treatment and rehabilitation of the weakened colonies and nests among Malaysian meliponiculturers. The methodology used was an online interview with 32 selected meliponiculturers in Malaysia. Approximately 69% of the weakened colonies failed to be rehabilitated, 25% recovered upon rehabilitation, while the remaining 6% still in the process of recovering. This study concluded that the effectiveness of rehabilitating the weakened colonies is still unsatisfactory, with only 25% showing recovery. Therefore it is necessary to provide an effective assistance to the meliponiculturers in overcoming the various problems before total nests abandonment and/or death of the colonies.
